Our club members have pledged over a hundred bowls to the 2012 Empty Bowl fundraiser for Tri-Lakes Cares. These are usually turned in at the September meeting, which has been cancelled because of flood damage at the Business of Art Center in Manitou. Here are some options for getting bowls to the fundraiser:

1) Bring them to the Liggetts’ studio tour the weekend of September 15 and 16th. For this weekend, it is OK to park on the street in Woodmoor. While you are in the area, stop by some of the other artists–a welder, bronze sculptor, and furniture maker if you want to see a lot of equipment. Jewelers and painters, too. More info at: Front Range Open Studios.

2) Drop them at Criterium Bicycles, 6150 Corporate Drive, open 8-8 Monday-Saturday and 10-6 Sundays at exit 148 off I-25.

3) Call Dennis: 481-8754 to let him know how many bowls you have ready.

4) If you have done #3, we may be able to do a last bowl round-up at the October meeting.

Dr. Bob Gibbs has donated over a hundred bowl blanks to our members for this fundraiser. He also works at Tri-Lakes Cares as a volunteer physician. The photo shows some bowls made from Dr. Bob’s bowl blanks.

Since 2008, the Pikes Peak Woodturners have donated wooden bowls to the Empty Bowl Fundraiser for Tri-Lakes Cares. It is not unusual to find a woodturning club joining with potters to raise funds for food pantries around the country. Our commitment runs a little deeper because one of our members, Dr. Bob Gibbs, is a volunteer physician with Tri-Lakes Cares. Dr. Bob also provides dozens of bowl blanks every year to give every member the opportunity to participate. Bowls are due back at the club by the September meeting.

The donated bowls generate at least $20 each for the pantry. Some of the more striking bowls go into the auction, with the potential to raise quite a bit more. Woodturners are welcome to join other artists at the dinner. Contact Dr. Bob or Dennis Liggett for more information about our club’s main service project.

The Waldo Canyon fire burned down the house of one of our mentors, Papa Joe Aquila. He was able to evacuate with just a few minutes to spare, and lost all of his woodturning equipment, and many of the wonderful toys he has made over the years. The house was across the street from the Flying W Ranch, which was the first big landmark lost in the fire. Papa Joe is living with family in Nebraska, but plans to move back to Colorado Springs. Scott has contact information for Papa Joe for those who would like to contact him.

Larry Fox housed evacuees from the fire outside Lake George, and then kept the guest room occupied with evacuees from Woodland Park. His house in Woodland Park is just west of the fire zone.

We were fortunate that Manitou Springs escaped the firestorm, and our meeting place at the Business of Art Center is OK.

Then it went to a pretty generic template that didn’t even mention the PPW. After a couple of days worth of tinkering, it is starting to take shape.

There are a lot more changes to come though. I need to get content online from the old website (especially the newsletters) and then we are going to add some features that we haven’t had in the past. So, please come back often and check on the status of the site!
